US Pentagon Authorizes Use of Low-Yield Nuclear Weapons on the Battlefield!
This is an extremely alarming piece of news, as it implies the opening the "nuclear Pandora’s box": indeed, such use would forever shatter the "nuclear taboo" that has helped to protect us from nuclear apocalypse.
While it is true that Russia, and perhaps China, have also developed "relatively low-yield" nuclear weapons, the US has gone a step further by normalizing their potential use through their inclusion in official strategy, specifically, by contemplating their deployment on the battlefield during a regional conflict, even when vital US interests are not necessarily under threat.
In this context, it is also worth noting that the US has developed the new B61-12 nuclear bomb : a tele-driven, "bunker-buster" weapon featuring a variable yield that can be dialed down to as little as 0.3 kilotons – 50 times less the yield of the Hiroshima bomb, yet 30 times that of the largest conventional bomb.
For example this capability could tempt Donald Trump to use them against deeply buried bunkers in Iran.
Notably, more than a hundred of these B61-12 bombs are already stationed at NATO bases in Italy, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Turkey.
In conclusion, this is a grave development aimed at erasing the vast divide between conventional and nuclear weapons - including at the doctrinal level.
Advocates of nuclear disarmament must alert the international community to this major risk facing humanity.
